Timeless Pulse

This CD is an unedited recording of a concert at CNMAT on Sunday, March 10, 2002. Using a pair of Earthworks QTCI Omni-directional Studio Microphones, Edmund Campion recorded the live performance directly to digital media. Mastering was carried out by Garth Powell and Kenny Evans.

Pauline Oliveros (1932) was born in Houston, TX. Oliveros' career as a composer spans five decades. She celebrated fifty years of composing in 2001. Oliveros serves as Distinguished Research Professor of Music at Rensselaer Polytechinic Institute in Troy, NY and Milhaud Artst in Residence at Mills College, Oakland, CA. Oliveros is based in Kingston, New York, is Founder and President of the Pauline Oliveros Foundation - a non-profit arts organization dedicated to fostering new work in the arts. Jennifer Wilsey, b. 1966, makes her home in Santa Rosa, CA, where she teaches, composes, and performs as a percussionist and pianist. About the performance she says, “My greatest love musically is to be in the exquisite not-knowing of free improvisation, and being thee with Pauline, George and David is as effortless as it gets.” In this performance, Jennifer plays cymbals, small gongs, bells, temple blocks, brass chimes, log drums, and Remo Tubano drums.

George Marsh was born in 1941 in East St. Louis, Ill. He now lives, teaches, composes, and performs in Santa Rosa, CA. His influences include Shelly Manne, Will Parsons, David Wessel, Allaudin Mathieu, Fred Kaz, Jiddu Krishnamurti, John Cage, Pauline Oliveros, and other deep listeners. He is teacher of Drumset and Rhythm at Sonoma State University and UC Santa Cruz. On this performance George plays large gongs, cymbal choir, drumset, shakers and Remo Tubano drums. George Marsh uses Aquarian drum heads, DW drums and pedals, Craviotto snare drums, Vic Firth sticks, brushes and mallets, and Zildjian cymbals and gongs.

David Wessel was born near East St. Louis, Ill. In 1942. He and George Marsh have been associated musically since their high school years. Wessel is currently Professor of Music and Audio Technologies (CNMAT) at the University of California Berkeley. His focus is on live performance electro-acoustic music where improvisation plays a central role.

David Wessel's instrument consists of Buchla's Thunder Controller interfaced to a Macintosh Computer running custom software written in the Max/MSP programming environment from Cycling '74. His diffusion system consisted of a custom 12 driver dodecahedron shaped source model speaker built from Meyer Sound Lab's MM4 transducers and a Meyer Sound UMS-IP Subwoofer.
