DRAM Celebrates the 95th Anniversary of John Cage's Birth

Tomorrow, September 5th, we mark composer John Cage's (1912-1992) birthday. One of the leading figures of the postwar avant-garde, through both his writings and music, Cage remains one of the most important influences on composers today.

In tribute to Cage, we have compiled a listing of his works available for streaming on DRAM.

Note: Cage wrote the Sonatas and Interludes for prepared piano gradually between 1946 and 1948. Maro Ajemian, to whom the work is dedicated, premiered the first four in performance at Town Hall in 1946, and she gave the first New York performance of the full set at a celebrated concert in Carnegie Recital Hall on January 12, 1949. This recording was the first CD release of the legendary 1950 performance by Ms. Ajemian, recorded in the studios of WOR in New York City, and originally released on the Dial record label in 1951.
